Arch

Here's another shot open for discussion.

I liked the historic look of this arch, its reflection in the moat and the broken gate within. I wanted to convey something of the quiet mistery about its rundown appearance in the early morning rain.

So what do you think? Does it leave you wondering what this place once was, what happened here and why is it deserted now?

  1. Hi Steve,

I really like this photo. The only thing I can pick that I don't like, is that it appears to be leaning to the left.

I like the separation from the background.
I like that there are interesting trees in the background (in nice soft focus so that aren't distracting).

The water droplets on the railing are nice too.

I would like it more if it wasn't leaning, and also had a little more detail in the grass on the top surface closest to the edge of the bridge.

    Nice pic.

    Craig.

Ps: I like the stone work. Stone buildings and bridges are really great!

  2. Hi Steve,

For me, I find the high contrast ripples at the front of the image a bit distracting. Would be nice to darken those a bit so they're less noticable. I'm not sure that I'd want to smooth out all the water, since the ripples add interest.

I like the bridge, but would be happy to see a little more on the sides. I'm curious to see the bank it connects with. But perhaps that's part of the mystery.

This picture doesn't make me think of somewhere that's deserted though. More like a popular park, with not too many people in it.

  3. Craig,

I've been looking at this image over and over for the last few days and I can't see the slope that you can. In this image there is very little reference for level except for the water and to me the water looks level.

In the top half of the image there are a few lines that lean left but as they say architecture worth photographing is seldom straight and level.

    Geoff,

I'm not sure what you're trying to say there. "A popular park with not too many people in it"... Sounds like a contradiction to me.

I think it was more like a not so popular park with no one in it. Especially since it was early morning and raining.

  4. Hi Steve,

I was looking primarily at the edging on the road on the bridge.
It looks a little bit higher on the right hand side than the left.

Maybe it's due to the position where you took the photo from?

    Regards
    Craig.
