The French Alps

Here's a shot taken while on a climbing holiday in the French Alps.

I liked the trail leading into the mountains with jagged peak everywhere. The two climbers are so small, emphasising the scale of these mountains.

However I don't really like the two paragliders who are setting up their flying machines on the mountain. While small, once noticed their presence takes on a lot of visual weight. I'd like to clone them out but such a task is beyond the capabilities of Lightroom.

What do you think? Should I get rid of them or leave them.

  1. Hi Steve

I personally don't mind the two paragliders in the picture. I would probably say they're even an interesting feature of the photograph. The canopies of their machines have a blue that matches the sky, and so fits in well with the picture. Perhaps if they had red, or yellow canopies, I'd feel differently.

While I must admit, they do take on an extra weight in the picture, I'm not sure how much of that is natural, as opposed to a byproduct of your comment, and the fact I had search for 10-15 seconds just to find them.

If you're looking for a nice remote mountaineering picture, then it would probably be better without them, but if the picture is about mountains and the sports that people enjoy in them, I think they're a great addition.

  2. Hi Steve,

    I like this image.
The line from the left hand side goes in nicely and gets me to the centre of the image.

I like that everything in the forground is white and covered with snow, and everything in the background is jaggard mountains that are not all white themselves.

I also like how there are a number of lines that go through the frame. Once you get to the centre (via a couple of different routes), you can followup up through some other lines that look like they might have been formed by glacial activity (I'm only guessing, you know the area and what it's history is).

I like that the sky is nice and blue too. (I have a soft spot for blue skies)

I don't have a problem with the paragliders.

If I took this photo, I would probably have put it up on the wall.

    I'm envious.

    Nice work.

    Regards
    Craig.

  3. Hi all,

I find the paragliders are small specks of high contrast distractions to the main theme of the image, Mountains. The climbers are quite small so act as a nice surprise once they are found by the viewer. However once the paragliders are found I find myself wondering exactly what they are. They are also quite small and so not immediately obvious. Since I know what they are, I find that they compete with the climbers for my attention and I bounce between them.

I think if I was trying to show the various ways people enjoy the mountains, I would try to have both the climbers and paragliders much larger and more central to the image.

    Thanks for the feedback though.
