Art or Photography?

Canon EOS 350D with Canon 18-200mm IS lens. Taken at 1/320 sec, f/11, ISO 1600, EFL 80mm

Ok, so here's a shot where I didn't like the original colours or textures so much, but I like the lines and shapes, so I buggered up the colour a whole lot more by adjusting the tone curve in lightroom.

Is it interesting?  Was it worth the time and effort?  Or should I just trash the picture and move on?

  1. Hi Geoff,

I like the colour changes you have made.

It works especially nicely on the yellow door, the bricks, the wall, side of the basket and table legs on the right.

The thing that looks to me like it doesn't belong anymore is the bowl with the chop sticks on top of it and maybe the white pipe.

It's almost like it was put in after the photo was taken.

I guess this is because both it and the pipe beside it are pure white and haven't been affected by the colour shift.

Now if the pipe was a rusty colour to start with then that would have been ok.
I'm not sure what you can do with the bowl though.

    Cheers
    Craig.

  2. Hi Craig, Thanks for your thoughts. I really don't like the pipe either. It just doesn't work with the style of the rest of the photo. I like your suggestion of turning it into a rusty metal pipe. Will see what I can do with that in photoshop. The bowl on the other hand, I like precisely because it doesn't fit the rest of the image. Like you say, it looks like it was placed there, rather than being a natural part of the image.

  3. Hi Geoff,

I get a sense of harmony and chaos while looking at this image. The colour shifts have created some very pleasing colour complements. Yellow with rust-orange and cyan make a great soothing colour triad, which helps to balance the chaotic scene before us.

The only thing I really don't like here is the graininess that comes from your method of processing the image. I would have perhaps tried some very heavy handed smoothing over the whole image and gone even more abstract.

I like the bowl in the image as it forms a harmonising anchor for the viewer, especially with the chopsticks neatly resting on top of the bowl. It stands in strong contrast against things like the overturned basket, a window flung open, the table on a lean as though it's about to fall apart and other assorted raw building materials scattered around the area.

In the end though, some interesting colours but not likely to find a space on my wall...

    Brutal Enough?
